Store antiques and rare furniture – with us in Zurich!

When storing antiques, there are a few simple principles that we introduce in this article. Learn how to prevent loss of value and enjoy your treasures for a long time.

Do you collect antiques and old furniture? Then you probably know the problem of not being able to display all your rare treasures as they deserve. Most of us have neither the time to deal extensively with storing antiques nor the resources to cherish and care for furniture like a pro

Storing antiques: Not in the cellar or garage

Storing antiques and rare items in a damp cellar is pure poison for delicate materials. There is a risk of moisture and water ingress, and unstable humidity also poses a major problem. Most collectibles prefer a well-tempered balance. Too little, and paintings, wood and paper become brittle and vulnerable. Too much humidity, and rust or mould are the unpleasant consequences.

If you are not sure about the humidity level in your chosen storage location, you can measure it with a hygrometer. Such an instrument is available in most DIY stores. Ideal relative humidity should be between 50 and 60 per cent.

Storing antiques: Temperature is less important

Many collectors mistakenly assume that temperature causes the greatest damage to organic materials. This is not the case. Temperature fluctuations alone do not cause damage. As long as you maintain balanced humidity in the air, your favourite pieces are optimally protected. At this point, however, we would like to emphasise that weather-related temperature fluctuations in garages and lofts are not suitable for storing valuables long-term.

If you have a room that tends to be slightly cooler (all year round) than the rest of the house, it is best to display and store your furniture there. Hallways and dimly lit rooms tend to be cooler than rooms with large windows.

Storing antiques: Avoid sun damage and pests

Do not expose antiques to direct sunlight. Strong UV radiation can adversely affect the surface of wooden furniture. The wood warms up and dries out faster. In addition, antiques were often dyed using sensitive plant dyes that fade under strong sunlight.

Another nuisance is pests. Damp new builds or older masonry often have high wall moisture, which can transfer to furniture. Leaving space for a small ventilation gap between the furniture and the wall prevents stagnant air from forming – the ideal breeding ground for mould.

During storage, you can also protect your antiques with furniture covers. This special film features microscopic air holes for optimal moisture control. Avoid airtight plastic wrap, which can cause moisture build-up.

Summary: Storing rare items and antiques correctly:

1. Humidity must be constant

2. Leave a small ventilation gap for air circulation

3. Do not use plastic wrap on furniture
