Are our storage units in Lucerne dry?

This article covers how dry our storage units are. We answer readers' questions.

We also dedicate part of this article to whether a storage unit in Lucerne is suitable for storing wine.

Did you know that the ideal humidity level in a room is between 30% and 50%? This is not only comfortable for occupants, but also prevents mold from forming. When these values are exceeded (which happens more often than you would expect), problems arise.

If moisture accumulates in your storage unit, your items become vulnerable to mold and rust. That is a real shame, especially if you store items of personal value, such as clothes, photos, wood, leather or electronic devices.

Are our storage units dry?

The short answer is: yes! Our temperature remains constant throughout the year; it never freezes, nor does it get hot in summer.

In our self storage facility in 8057, the temperature is constant – the units are located on the first basement level and it never gets colder than 15 degrees, nor warmer than 18 degrees. Furthermore, some boxes are situated directly beneath glass skylights, benefiting from daylight from above if relevant to your storage needs.

With us, you can store furniture and other items in a moisture-resistant and mold-free environment. The average temperature at Forchstrasse is slightly cooler, which is particularly interesting for wine lovers. Anyone looking to store bottles and crates will find ideal conditions. This also applies to barrels with a capacity of 50-100 liters.

How do I make sure my storage unit is dry?

Keep your items safe and protected. The basic prerequisite is that the storage units are dry. With us in Lucerne, conditions are ideal as we can guarantee that units maintain a constant temperature and remain dry for long-term storage.

What if you store items in a unit that does not guarantee this? Check carefully so that your belongings suffer no damage.

Here's how:

You can regularly check dryness by measuring humidity in your storage unit. It should never exceed 50%. You can check in two ways:

- Hire a specialist

- Install a hygrometer in the storage unit

Neither option is particularly cheap. However, the investment can be worthwhile if you are storing valuable items.

Once you know the humidity level, you can take the next steps if there is a problem.

If you notice mold, you must seek professional help.

Choose your storage unit carefully

Before storing your valuables, ensure they are completely dry with no traces of moisture. You know the saying:

A bad apple can spoil the whole barrel? It is the same with a damp item – it can ruin all the other objects. Check all items for traces of moisture before packing them up. This is particularly recommended for swimming gear, diving equipment, etc.

Extra tip: Make your own silica gel desiccant.

A silica pad absorbs excess moisture, keeping humidity under control inside your storage unit.

DIY desiccant – you will need:

- a piece of fabric and
- silica gel.

Form a small pouch out of two square pieces of fabric and fill it with silica gel. Sew it shut and hang the bag inside your storage unit. Easy!

With these tips, your items are guaranteed to stay dry!
